This squash has become a Hemphill Seed's favourite. It produces the traditional delicious delicata squash but instead of growing on long tangled vines, it grows similar to a zucchini plant. They can be staked and grown vertically, making them ideal for smaller gardens.
Delicata is smooth and sweet when roasted and the rind is tender enough when cooked to eat. It is a productive plant and the squash store well.
The bush variety was bred and selected by Molly John and George Moriarty of Cornell University.
Bush Type Delicata Seeds
Direct sow or start indoors 4-6 weeks before your last frost. Once all risk of frost has passed, transplant outdoors. Space plants 3-4' apart, you can stake the plants to save space. The plants will first produce all male flowers and then start producing female flowers after a few days. If a female flower fails to be pollinated the fruits will wither, these should be removed to promote more fruit to grow. Pollination can be done by hand to encourage success.
