Perennial. 3 years to establish. Open-pollinated.
This asparagus seed has been saved from the patch already existing on our farm that was planted generations before by the Arcand family. It produces beautiful dark green shoots with a purple tint near the top. The taste of this asparagus compared to store-bought is amazing, our family even loves to eat it raw. It's similar to a snap pea in taste.
Asparagus is harvested in late spring. However, asparagus does take 3 years to establish from seed. Picking before this can weaken plants, so please don't pick before this. A good rule is once the asparagus is at least as thick as a pencil, it is good to pick.
Arcand's Asparagus Seed
Soak seeds for 2 hours prior to planting. Start seeds indoors 10-12 weeks before your last frost. Place under bright lights. Seeds can take 2-8 weeks to germinate, so be patient. Heat mats can be used to decrease this time.
Transplant the seedlings into the ground once all danger of a frost has passed. Put each plant into a separate 10cm or 4" deep hole, gradually cover the crown with soil as it grows.
Fertilize each spring with an all purpose fertilizer.
